Top Ten Must-Do Activities on Oahu, Hawaii

Planning a trip to O'ahu? With its world-famous beaches, lush rainforests, and rich cultural experiences, it's no wonder this iconic island is a dream destination. Whether you’re a first-timer or returning to the islands, we've listed the top 10 things to do on Oʻahu, Hawaii to dramatically deepen your connection to the spirit of aloha.

To keep Hawaii beautiful and make your trip a positive experience, please respect local culture and nature. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, follow posted signs, and enjoy our recommended favorites:

1. Hike Diamond Head Crater

Start your Oʻahu adventure with a sunrise hike up Diamond Head, an extinct volcanic crater offering glorious panoramic views of Waikīkī and the Pacific Ocean. The 0.8-mile trail is moderately steep and shade is limited, but the view of Honolulu and the coastline from the top is worth every step!

2. Visit Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial

A sobering but essential stop, Pearl Harbor honors those lost in the 1941 attack. The USS Arizona Memorial, accessible by boat, floats above the sunken battleship and provides a powerful historical experience. You can still see the oil bubbling up to the water's surface from the Arizona.

3. Explore the North Shore

If you're visiting in winter, head to the North Shore to witness massive waves and world-class surfers at spots like Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay. In the summer, the waves are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Grab a signature slice of chocolate haupia pie at Ted's Bakery just up the road, or head down to charming Haleiwa for some shopping and snag a refreshing shave ice at Matsumoto's or Aoki's.

4. Snorkel at Hanauma Bay

This protected marine life conservation area is home to vibrant coral reefs and hundreds of tropical fish species. Make sure to watch the mandatory educational video before diving in — it helps protect the reef ecosystem. Tuck some reef-safe sunscreen, towels, and an underwater camera in your Tobiq bag and enjoy snorkeling in one of the most iconic bays in the world. Keep an eye out for turtles!

5. Stroll Through Waikīkī

No trip to Oʻahu is complete without exploring Waikīkī. Relax on the beach, shop along Kalākaua Avenue, enjoy live Hawaiian music, and try local dishes like loco moco or Duke's hula pie. If you're traveling with kids, the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium are family-friendly options within walking distance. If you're up for adventure, take a surf lesson and glide along the sparkling Waikiki waves.

6. Take a Scenic Drive Along the Windward Coast

Rent a car and drive the Kamehameha Highway along the Windward side of the island. You'll be wowed by the lush and dramatic Ko'olau mountains (look for waterfalls when it rains), and you can stop at famous sites like the Byodo-In Temple, Kualoa Ranch, and numerous beach parks ideal for a scenic picnic. For a fun adventure, look into renting a kayak or paddle board and paddle out to Mokoli'i (also known as Chinaman's Hat), where you can take a short but steep hike to the top of the island and enjoy a 360 view of O'ahu and the turquoise ocean!

7. Tour Kualoa Ranch

This lush valley, known as “Hawaiʻi’s Jurassic Park,” offers movie site tours, ATV rides, ziplining, horseback riding, and jungle expeditions. Kualoa Ranch is a blend of adventure, history, and Hollywood - a must for any movie enthusiast!

8. Experience a Traditional Hawaiian Luau

Immerse yourself in Polynesian culture with a luau. Enjoy traditional Hawaiian food like kalua pig and poi, live music, and mesmerizing hula performances. Popular spots include Paradise Cove, Chief’s Luau, and the Polynesian Cultural Center. The PCC is best described as a "cultural theme park" with simulated Polynesian island villages that offer cultural experiences such as music, dance, crafts, and shows. For a memorable experience, reserve your seats for their award-winning Ali'i Luau and the spectacular Ha: Breath of Life show in the evening.

9. Relax at Lanikai Beach

Tucked away in Kailua, Lanikai Beach is a local favorite known for its powdery white sand and clear turquoise waters. It’s perfect for kayaking to the nearby Mokulua Islands (the Mokes) or simply soaking in the serenity. Keep a lookout for Hawaiian monk seals bathing on the beach! If you enjoying hiking, take the nearby 1.5 mile round trip trail to the Lanikai Pillbox. The view is absolutely stunning!

10. Hike to a Waterfall

One of the most popular hikes on O'ahu is Manoa Falls. This verdant rainforest trail leads you to a 150-foot waterfall surrounded by dense vegetation. It’s an easy hike, suitable for families with young children, and feels like stepping into a tropical movie set. Another trail that is friendly for all ages and abilities is Waimea Valley on the North Shore. Enjoy a paved walk through a gorgeous botanical garden for about 3/4 of a mile before arriving at Waimea Falls - and bonus, if conditions are good, you can swim here!
