Thinking about setting sail with Disney Cruise Line? Here's our real, unpaid, full-price customer review after experiencing the Disney magic firsthand. Our family had a great time overall - but we’d give it a solid 7/10.
Why not a 10? Let’s break it down. Here are five downsides and five highlights that you really need to know before booking.
The Cons of a Disney Cruise 👎
1. Crew Members Rely on Tips Instead of Fair Wages
We were shocked to learn on the last day that Disney's amazing service team isn’t paid a livable base salary. They rely almost entirely on guest tips, despite working 12+ hours daily. When we asked guest services about this, they wouldn't share details. This felt wrong for a company like Disney.
2. The Price Tag Is High
Disney Cruises cost significantly more than other family-friendly cruise lines. And if you're not a die-hard Disney fan, it may not feel worth the premium price, especially in light of the tipping situation above.
3. Limited Amenities for Teens & Adults
While younger kids are well entertained, teens and adults might feel left out. There's only one water slide, no surf simulator or rock wall, and not many on-board activities targeted to teens.
4. Excursion Time Discrepancy
We booked a Disney-sponsored Snuba excursion, advertised as 4 hours. But actual water time? Just 25 minutes. The rest was taken up by transport, instructions, and waiting. We’d appreciate more transparency in activity descriptions.
5. Popcorn Costs Extra (Seriously)
Yes, even popcorn! It’s $6 at the theater. When you’ve already paid thousands for the cruise - including unlimited food - being nickel-and-dimed for popcorn feels… off.
The Pros of a Disney Cruise 👍
1. The Crew Is Incredible
Despite the pay issue, the service was truly exceptional. Every staff member we met was kind, thoughtful, and 100% focused on making our trip magical. We felt so cared for by people from all over the world.
2. Next-Level Food Quality
We're still dreaming about the food. From breakfast to dinner, it was beyond what we expected: delicious, diverse, and impressively high-quality for mass service. You won’t leave hungry!
3. Magical Experience for Kids
If you're going with kids or tweens, this is where Disney shines. The kids' clubs are safe, fun, and well-run with staff who genuinely engage with the children. Our kids had a great time!
4. Broadway-Caliber Entertainment
Every night brought a new show - and we’re talking actual Broadway level. Singing, costumes, effects... Disney brings their A-game when it comes to performances.
5. Immaculately Clean Ship
With over 3,000 guests on board, the ship was unbelievably spotless. From food courts to hallways, the cleanliness was next-level. It was honestly impressive!
Is a Disney Cruise Worth It?
It depends. If you value top-tier service, magical entertainment, and an unforgettable experience for your kids, the cost might be worth it.
But if you're looking for a thrill-filled, teen-friendly ship or a more affordable cruise vacation, you might want to explore other options.
